"THE PITTSBURGH CRECHE"
|
Originally constructed in 1999, "THE PITTSBURGH CRECHE" is assembled annually
by the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Councilof Carpenters atop the fountain
base at the U.S. Steel Tower Plaza. Commissioned by Vatican officials, this
Nativity scene is near exact copy of the one found at the Vatican. The original
figures were made by Italian artist, Pietro Simonelli. Each is life-sized or larger,
featuring faces, hands and feet made of clay. The bodies are paper maché on a
wooden frame. Over recent years, J.E. Scenic Technologies of Pittsburgh has made
additional figures for the crèche.
